US colleges and universities are among the world’s prestigious institutions. They attract international students, professors and researchers around the world in pursuance of academic superiority. The majority of the highest ranked institutions are in the United States of America.

Educational institutions in America vary in terms of curriculum they offer. Some may give prominence to technical curriculum while others may stress on liberal arts, many institutions may combine all.

The US university system is mostly decentralized. Individual states merely administer each public university in their respective state. Public institutions usually charge low tuition fees to in state students than to students who come from a different state.

  Every university in America operates according to standards set by the accreditation organizations, to ensure for the quality of the degrees they offer. The accreditation organizations rate institutions on the basis of their academic quality, degrees of their faculty, and quality of their libraries among others.
 
Two year schools often know as community colleges have open admissions with usually low tuition fees compared to other state and private institutions. Two year schools mostly offer associate's degree. Four year schools are mainly undergraduate institutions, which offer bachelor’s degree.

        Educational institutions in United States are either private or public and are research oriented which provide graduate and undergraduate education. Public institutions usually have large student strength and are operated by respective states and territories. They oftentimes have a broad student body with preliminary classes numbering in hundreds. Most of the public institutions are co-educational.

Among many private institutions, some are religious while others are involved in secular education. Most private institutions are nonprofit while some work for profit. Some are affiliated with a certain church, and some are nonsectarian.
